Back in college I had a 1978 Datsun 510 wagon with snow tires. It was amazing in snow and ice. I frequently passed 4wd trucks that were either stuck or spinning out. I once pulled an eagle 4wd out of a snow bank with my trusty rusty Datsun. Sadly I had to give it back to my dad and he gave it to my step sister, who ruined it.

Sadly this photo is from bring-a-trailer. My datsun was a bit more used, but very serviceable and drove great. She ruined it by not putting oil in the engine, so it had a 2.0L seizure.

Our old Suzuki SX4 was an absolute blast to drive in snow and was unstoppable. The 4-speed auto was hateful in dry weather, but in snow it was geared perfectly.

You are all choosing the wrong type of snow transportation. This maybe slower (and bigger), but it stops for nothing.
I’m still within the rules, it’s not a truck or SUV. It is 6x6 Skidder.

I had a manual 2010, and loved it. It was the perfect winter car.

I’ve driven my 1973 Buick through many, many snowstorms and on some pretty hairy roads to boot. And only on all-season tires! I never used snows until recently. I have never been stuck in the snow, even that winter I had tires with almost no tread left... momentum is your friend.
Actually the only thing I could get stuck in the snow was my old full size Chevy Van. Even with snow tires on the back, it could get stuck pulling out of my driveway if it was a little icy. Pulling from a flat driveway up onto the crown of the flat road was too much for it. It was that bad. If I couldn’t get it out of the driveway, it stayed home and we drove something else.

My mother-in-law bought one with the CVT and after driving it I can confirm that the CVT is WAAAAAYY better than the 4-speed, but I’d have rather had the manual.

Yours for the low price of $2500. $3000 if you want the engine put back in. It’s not legal for US import for another four years and a bit, but I’d be happy to look after it up here and make sure it gets driven for you until then or you forget you own it, whichever comes first.

An Audi allroad can be stopped by many things. Broken timing belt? Yes. Leaking airbags? Sure. A turkey sandwich with just mayonnaise? Absolutely. But not snow. Until I got my FZJ80, the allroad was far and away the best winter car I’ve ever had. Crank the suspension up to 4 and have at it.

Mustang, on hard compound slicks, with pedestrians nearby.
The pedestrians will guarantee the traction to get started (the Mustang always finds a way to hit the pedestrians), the hard compound slicks guarantee the inability to stop it.
